Writing Exercises

Point of View
Think of an episode from your own past and then rewrite it from a perspective other than your own. It can be in first person point of view or third, so long as it's not from your own.

Create an Active Character
First, find find an object in your house that interests you, however strange or mundane: a feather boa, a meat grinder, and a roll of toilet paper are perfectly good options. Then sit down and write out, in your character's words, why she or he stole the object.

The Art of Very Few Words
Write 500-600 words, starting in the present moment, going back to some moment in the past, and then returning to the present. In this way, both past self and present self are revealed in a very short space. It can be autobiographical or fictional.

Let's Play With Eroticism
Interesting discussion at book club - how graphically could you write a sex scene? Well, there's only one way to find out! But let's say this one can't be autobiographical? Nobody wants to think of us that way - instead, write a scene between a famous couple in history.
